ORIGIN OF ANGELS
THEY WERE CREATED BY GOD
Psalm 148:2-5 – Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! 3 Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all you stars of light! 4 Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, and you waters above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created.
Colossians 1:15-17 – He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
John 11:1-3-14 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
ORDER AND RANK OF ANGELS
THEY ARE LOWER THAN JESUS
Hebrews 1:1-6 – God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom all He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 for to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, today I have begotten You?” And again: “I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son.” 6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.”
THEY ARE HIGHRER THAN MAN
Hebrews 2:6-7 – But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You take care of him? 7 You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of Your hands.
Though angels are higher than man, we are not to worship them: Colossians 2:18 – Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind…
Though higher than man, the Bible says man shall judge angels. I Corinthians 6:1-3 – Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?
In what sense shall we judge angels? In the same sense that we will judge the world. Our righteousness (which comes through Christ) will condemn the sinful of the world and the sinfulness of the angels who fell.
NAMES OF ANGELS
THERE ARE THREE WHO ARE NAMED IN THE BIBLE
Gabriel: Luke 1:19,26 – And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. 26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth. Gabriel was the witnessing angel. He made pronouncements.
Michael: Jude 1:9 – Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Michael was the warring angel.
There are Seraphim and Cherubim, and some assume these are angels. The Seraphim in Isaiah’s vision were above the throne of God. (Isaiah 6:2-6.) The Cherubim appear to serve under the throne of God, (Ezekiel 10 & 11) were placed at the gate of the garden when Adam sinned to keep him from the tree of life (Genesis 3:24).
Lucifer: Isaiah 14:11-15; Ezekiel 28:11-17. I believe Lucifer (Satan) was the head of worship in heaven and that he came to a point where he sought to be worshiped instead of glorifying God. He was cast out of heaven to the earth and his greatest desire is to be worshipped by people of the earth. (Revelation 12:4,9; Rev. 13:4,8.) Therefore, before his fall he was the angel of worship. This is my theory or speculation based on my study of Scripture.
Next week in Pt. 4 I will focus on the actions of angels, past, present and future. -Steve
